Morada Sangria is a traditional Spanish drink made with red wine and citrus extracts. Garnet color and fresh on the palate. Pasteurization preserves the color, aromas and flavors. 7% alcohol. It is very refreshing Sangria with around 85 grams of sugar. Sangria is now one of the hottest items in the beverage industry and its growing exponentially year to year. Serves well chilled, on its own or with lemonade and slices of fruit like peach, banana or apple.
-Vintage Cellar Description

Personal Review:
All you can smell is oranges. Once you taste it, you feel like you just juiced all kinds of fruits into you glass. There is banana, oranges, obviously grapes, and some lemons. It is delightful and refreshing.

Tasting - "Lost Vineyards Shiraz/Cab Sauv"

Region:          Unlisted

Online Review:
A clear, robust red with a purplish hue. The aroma is very distinctive and fresh with a fruity bouquet of cherries, blackberries and red currant. It is a dry wine with a medium to full body.
-Marketviewliquor.com

Personal Review:
The nose is also red fruit and sweet much like the nero d'avola. The taste is strong of licorice, dislike, and cherry. The cherry taste is very artificial and syrup-like, It is also very bitter and earthy.

Tasting - "Villa Pozzi Nero"

Name:           Villa Pozzi Nero d'Avola
Varietal:         Nero d'Avola
Region:          Sicily
Country:        Italy
Year:             2010
Price:            $8.95

Online Review:
An intense, inky red, the Nero d’Avola seductively reveals a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, vanilla, and a hint of figs delivered in a leather basket. On the palate, this wine is opulent, full-bodied, and viscous, with a great intensity, superb purity, and a layered, seamless personality that would convince most tasters that this is New World personified.
-Winemaker

Personal Review:
The nose is of red fruit and something sweet. I couldn't place the sweet smell. The taste is full of licorice and something tart. It was very dry and bitter with a short after palate.

Tasting - "Tres Ojos Rose"

Name:            Tres Ojos
Varietal:         50% Garnacha and 50% Tempranillo
Region:          Calatayud
Country:        Spain
Year:             2009
Price:            $1.95

Online Review:
This 50/50 blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo instantly wafts aromas of strawberries and raspberries. On the palate juicy red fruits and plum carry through on the smooth, dry, and crisp finish. Medium acidity allows you the pleasure of enjoying it just a few moments longer. An extremely pleasant rosado, this wine is versatile enough to drink alone or serve with a salad. I (thoroughly) enjoyed it with butifarra (Catalan white sausage) with mushrooms, gazpacho, and gambas ajillo.
-Rick Fisher (www.bodegaspanishwine.com)

Personal Review:
The nose is full of cherry. It comes off very dry with a hint of spices. There is a balance of acidity and heat.

Tasting - "Les Perles Piquepoul"

Name:           Les Perles Piquepoul
Varietal:         Piquepoul
Region:          Cotes de Thau
Country:        France
Year:             2011
Price:            $7.95

Outside Review:
Light and young, this is a straightforward but enjoyable selection that would be an ideal match fro light fare such as grilled chicken salads or fluke. Apple flesh, nectarine, and sweet citrus oil aromas and flavors appear on the nose and palate while the short finish is infused with a flavor of green melon rind.
-Vintage Cellar Description

Personal Review:
Light fruit scent and apple on the nose. The taste was full of apples. There was a nice crisp with the acidity and the light alcohol. It was not overly sweet.

Dinner - Zeppoli's "The Big Varietal"

Every Sunday, Matthew Burch hosts a wine sampling with food at Zeppoli's Italian Restaurant and Wine Shop located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The theme this week was "The Big Varietals". Matthew was trying to give an introduction to the most popular varietals.

Me and my group of friends visited the restaurant last Sunday. To my surprise, two of our guests happened to be my friend's parents. Together we had a great time eating, drinking and talking about what we were eating and drinking.

Now on to the technical stuff. We tasted NINE wines. Three of which were white, four of which were red and two of which were dessert wines. The food was buffet style so we basically ate the same thing with every wine.

Here is one of the only photos we got of the food. As you can imagine, we were more focused on the wine. To eat, we had a greek salad, spaghetti and meatballs, artichoke dip with break, cheese stuffed ravioli, and for dinner we had chocolate and vanilla cake. The nine wines we tried were a pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, syrah cabernet sauvignon, mascato d'asti and a brachetto d'acqui. I had tried all of the varietals before except for the brachetto d'acqui. This was our last wine of the night and it was a dessert wine.

Just for some proof, here is a photo of the entire group. And so you don't think we grabbed some random locals, the daughter is the one in the pink scarf. See the resemblance? It's uncanny. Anyways, here we all are I believe on our last ounce of wine for the night. Matthew was kind enough to take the photo for us. Not that it matters too much, but I am the one in the maroon shirt in the middle. Alright, now the following could get a little boring since I have to describe nine wines but it part of the assignment.

The White Wines
Torre di Luna 2011 Pinot Grigio IGT Italy - $10.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 13% Straw colored with green highlights. Delicate aromas with hints of pear and floral. Dry and full-bodied, discrete aromatic persistence, and a pleasant aftertaste. Perfect for poached or boiled clams, mussels, squid, octopus and grilled fish.

My Description:
The nose was very light with the scent of  nice crisp apples. It tasted dry but the balance of sugar and acidity made it very pleasant on the palate.

Sierra Cruz 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Maule Valley Chile - $7.99
Description Given by the Host:
This Chilean Sauvignon Blanc just oozes with bright citrus flavors and a nose of herbs and grass. Stylistically, it is a cross between the herbal, grassy wines so prevalent in Sonoma County and the riper, more fruit forward products of New Zealand.

My Description:
It smelled of outdoors and maybe in the woods. The term "forest floor" was thrown around several times at our table. The smell was also mixed with a floral bouquet. The taste was not so similar. It was dry with a nice balance of sweetness and acidity, much like the previous one, but no woodsy or floral taste.

Hope Estates 2009 Chardonnay Hunter Valley Australia - $11.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 13%; The key for our chardonnay is balance and complexity. Without using too much oak our barrel fermented style has an amazing length of peach, pineapple and melon characters but is balanced beautifully with stone citrus freshness. (Probably winemaker notes)

My Description:
The nose was full of light peach and fruity smells. There was a very strong citrus and fruity taste with a fresh feeling on the tongue coming from the acidity and the heat.

The Red Wines
Coastal Vines 2010 Pinot Noir Sonoma California - $9.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 12.5% Rich, plum color with cherry notes and a touch of vanilla accentuates this wine's soft flavors and finish. "Coastal Vines Pinot Noir is a medium-intensity, maroon-red wine with aromas of blackberry and toasted wood. On the palate, lively flavors of ripe cherries, strawberries, and plum come to a clean, balances finish" (probably winemaker or wine critic).

My Description:
The cherry was very obvious on the nose but it took a little determination to try and find the hint of vanilla. The palate came off with a nice balance of heat and flavor. Full of cherries and oak and other berries. Overall very well balanced.

Kenwood 2010 "Yulupa" Merlot California - $11.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 13.5%, 98% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Yulupa Merlot is a wine specially crafted from select barrel lots of wines made from California's best appellations. Bright red fruit aromas of cherry and plum combine with complex notes of clove and licorice, well-structured elegant tannins contribute to a long pleasing finish. Aged 20 months in French and American oak.

My Description:
The nose was of sweet plums, cherries and other berries. The only thing I could taste was the licorice and to be frank I hate licorice. The alcohol content wasn't that noticeable on the palate.

Yalumba Shiraz 2011 (Was not included on menu)
No Description Given :(

My Description:
The nose was fruity and smelled specifically of strawberries. The taste was very dry and bitter, the fruit did not come through as well. It was very strong with strong peppery taste and harsh acidity.

Gen 5 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Lodi California - $11.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 13.9% Juicy red and black fruit flavors that are well-balanced and textured and soft on the palate. 100% sustainably farmed; Lodi rules certified, Wilfred Wong: "Taking Lodi into a whole new level, the finely-tuned '09 Gen 5 Cabernet shows intricate and complex flavors; ripe for sure, yet classy and refined; long finish." 92 Points

My Description:
Smelled of black berries and cherries. It was very dry with a very long finish. It was full-bodied by the bitter taste was way too overpowering for me to enjoy it.

Dessert Wines

Famiglia Pasqua 2011 Moscato d'Asti DOCG Piedmont Italy - $13.99
Description Given by the Host:
Alcohol 5.5% This is one of the most popular varieties of Moscato wines grown in the Asti area of Italy and thus named so. This is a sweet wine with low alcohol concentration. It is preferably consumed in the paired form with desserts and thus categorized under dessert wines. It is produced from the Moscato Bianca grape variety.

My Description:
The smell was very light and fruity. It tastes like Welch's white grape juice probably because how very sweet it is. Went well with my vanilla cake. Big fan of this one.

Banfi 2010 "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG Italy - $9.99
Description Given by the Host:
Delicate bouquet of rose petals and offers sensuous flavors of fresh raspberries and strawberries. Its effervescence is softer than that of a champagne, yet it yields a persistent and delicate pink froth.

My Description:
The nose was of flowers and berries. On the palate there was a very delicate taste of flowers and berries. It was not too sweet and came off very fresh. Also one of my favorites.

Here is a photo of my friends enjoying the tasting. Overall I had a great experience. Hopefully the next time the theme will incorporate a region or country. I haven't tasted many wines from Europe and would love to give that a try. One last thing! I did want to note that all of us decided we could taste a major difference in tasting the wine solo versus drinking it with food. We preferred drinking with food since the majority of the wines were dry and the food softened the tannins ;)

Tasting - "Gabriella Chianti"

Name:           Gabriella Chianti
Varietal:         Sangiovese
Region:         Tuscany
Country:        Italy
Year:             2008
Price:            $7.95

Vintage Cellar Review:
This beautiful wine has the very deep red, almost purple color, that you would expect in a Chianti. The first thing you notice is the fruit, balanced by a bit of spice. It's a good dry wine with a bold flavor. Even with it's boldness, this Chianti is velvety smooth.

Personal Review:
This wine was very strong and very bitter. It was full of flavor but it is so overwhelming I could pick out anything individually. Note to self, not ready for the Chiantis just yet.

Tasting - "Lavarini Valpolicella Classico"

Name:          Lavarini Valpolicella Classico
Varietal:        Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara

Country:        Italy
Year:             2010
Price:            $6.95

Online Review:
The red ruby color and the dry taste give this wine joviality and cordiality. It is fresh and fruity, with lovely strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors, with nice spice and a silky texture.
-Winemaker

Personal Review:
Taste of berries and fruits. It is a very dry and smooth wine. It did leave my tongue feeling very dry. This was a very interesting wine. I thought it was okay but not my favorite.

Tasting - "Dom de Miral Rose"

Name:           Domaine de Mirail Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot
Varietal:         Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Region:          Cote de Gascogne
Country:        France
Year:             2011
Price:            $5.95

Online Review:
This lovely Rosé is a classic blend from Southwest France and, as a spicy mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it proudly announces its origin's proximity to Bordeaux. Still showing the primary aromas of these famous grapes, this pink (and very pretty) wine leans a bit further toward the fruity/musky side. It's delicate, firm, and distinctive in its refreshing and highly aromatic appeal!
-Wineauthority.com

Personal Review:
This is a semi-sweet wine with a floral taste. It has a balanced acidic bite and goes down very smoothly. This is definitely a wine I wouldn't mind trying again.

Tasting - "Norton Torrontes"

Online Review:
Greenish yellow with hints of gold. Intense aromas of white peach, rose petal, and jasmine. Pleasant and well balanced on the palate.
-Winemaker

Personal Review:
This wine was dry but without the bitter taste. It was very soft and light on the tongue with a hint of a flowery taste. Note that this is grown in Argentina, says the bartender.

Tasting - "Dibon Cava"

Name:           Dibon Cava Brut Reserve
Varietal:        Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo
Region:         Penedes
Country:        Spain
Year:             NV
Price:            $9.95

Online Review:
Light gold with an abundance of bubbles, this wine has aromas of golden delicious apples and pears with pleasant floral notes. Crisp and light-bodied on the palate, the slightly sweet dried fruit flavors are accompanied by a mild minerality on the palate. The finish is toasty but exceedingly brief.
-Anything But Chardonnay (www.abcwinereviews.com)

Personal Review:
As per the name, this was a dry wine. It had a long lasting taste with a hint of light apple. There was a harsh bitter after taste. As a note to myself; not my taste.

Tasting - "Opera Prima Pink Moscato"

Name:           Opera Prima Pink Mocato
Varietal:         Muscat
Region:          La Manch
Country:        Spain
Year:             NV
Price:            $5.95

Online Review:
This fine sparkling presents an intense aroma of fresh berries and tropical fruits with hints of white flower petals. Delicate bubbles caress the palate offering a silky and pleasant sweetness well balanced by a crisp, refreshing finish. Ideal on its own, as an aperitif or with all types of sweets and desserts.
-Winemaker

Personal Review:
I was very excited to try this bottle. When I got to the wine tasting, one of my friends was leaving already with a bottle of it he had just purchased. To my dismay, I really hated this wine. It tasted like a fruity soap. I believe it was the fault of the carbonation. This only thing I could taste was soap.

Tasting - "Black Opal Shiraz"

Name:           Black Opal Shiraz
Varietal:         Syrah
Region:          South Eastern Australia
Country:        Australia
Year:             2011
Price:            $5.95

Online Review:
An excellent example of the modern style shiraz that exhibits generous body and flavour. The bouquet gives plenty of plum and dark berry fruit characters with a hint of oak and varietal spice. The rich, soft palate is complexed by soft tannins and a fine oak character. The complex varietal character and soft oak tannin, distinguishes this wine and ensures it is extremely approachable in its youth.
-MarketviewLiquor.com (might be winemaker review)

Personal Review:
The only thing I could taste in this wine was the pepper and spice. It was very overwhelming. It also has an earthy taste. Definitely not my kind of wine.

Tasting - "Meditrina"

Name:           Sokol Blosser Meditrina
Varietal:         Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel
Region:          Dundee Hills, Oregon
Country:        USA
Year:             NV
Price:            $7.95

Online Review:
A core of rich, lush raspberry from the Syrah. The Zin brings spice, tannin and structure. And the Pinot Noir brings flowers, earth and elegance. It all adds up to a luscious, juicy, easy-drinking mouthful of red wine that's both bright and vibrant yet round and soft.
-Winemaker

Personal Review:
It comes off with a nose of cherry and raspberry. The taste is smooth and dry. It was also very fruity and tasted of cherries and raspberries. There was a slight bite to it as well.

Tasting - "WMG Chardonnay/Semillon"

Name:           Wine Men of Gotham Chardonnay/Semillon
Varietal:         80% Chardonnay and 20% Semillon

Clean fresh and vibrant nose with hints of tropical fruit and straw. Excellent acid balance.
-Winemaker

This wine has so many different flavors. It is very fruity and has a nice acidic bite. It has a nice long finish that is very pleasant.

Tasting - "Beringer Riesling"

Name:           Beringer's Estate Riesling
Varietal:         Riesling
Region:          California
Country:        USA
Year:             2009
Price:            $5.95

Online Review:
This is a wonderfully refreshing wine – its ripe peach and apricot flavors are perfectly balanced by a touch of lemon-lime. The brightness and acidity of the wine make it very food-friendly while the enticing peach and apricot flavors make it difficult to have just one glass!
-Winemaker (At least I think. It is not cited but used by almost every website as the review)

Personal Review:
This wine was very light on the taste buds. It was like a sparkling, flower tasting water. It was semi-sweet and not very acidic.

Tasting - "Rawson's Retreat Shiraz Cabernet"

Name:          Penfold's Rawson's Retreat Shiraz Cabernet
Varietal:       Blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon
Region:        South Easter
Country:      Australia
Year:           2010 (ignore the above photo vintage)
Price:           $6.45

Online Review:
Dark cherry red. Lifted, fresh and lively, offering an array of ripe summer berries and dark spices, with just a touch of subtle oak lurking in the background. A lovely balance of summer berries and light spices with soft tannins adding length on the palate. This medium bodied wine has an attractive fleshy mid-palate and juicy freshness on the finish, ideal for early drinking enjoyment.
-Winemaker's Notes

Personal Review:
First off I would like to note that I tried this wine at the happy hour of Hotel Helix. This place was very interesting and I was surprised my parents were staying there. They said they were the oldest folks in the hotel. The theme was semi-hipster slash disco.

Alright! On to the wine. It was very full bodied. There was a bitter after-taste, which I was told was the result of tannins, and an earthy taste. This wine has a high alcohol content and I felt it right away.

Tasting - "Highlander Blush"

Name:           Radforn University Highlander Blush (Chateau Morrisette)
Varietal:        Blend of riesling, chambourcin and vidal blanc
Region:         Virginia
Country:        USA
Year:             2012
Price:            $3.95

Online Review:
I am assuming that this is a new wine because the only reviews I could find online are those done by my fellow classmates. Please forgive me for not offering a different perspective.

Personal Review:
This wine smelled and tasted like a boxed fruit juice. There was an apple and a berry taste to go with it. If I could sum up the experience; it tasted like a fruity dessert. Yummy wine for those not looking for something to complex or full bodied.

Tasting - "Finca del Castillo Tempranillo"

Name:           Finca del Castillo Tempranillo
Varietal:        Tempranillo
Region:          La Mancha
Country:        Spain
Year:             2011
Price:            $4.95

Online Review:
Light and mellow, with bright cherry and cranberry notes. Very fresh, this is a terrific wine for making sangria, but on its own is nice with burgers, pizza or tacos.
- Kim Sopko (Winetransit.com)

Personal Review:
It has a very sweet smell. At first it has an acidic bite and come off as a little dry. It finishes with an earthy and a peppery taste.

Tasting - "Georges Duboeuf Baujolais Nouveau"

Name:           Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau
Varietal:        Gamay
Region:          Beaujolais
Country:        France
Year:             2012
Price:            $3.95

Online Review:
There is immediate sweetish red strawberry fruit; fresh, lively red forest berries; raspberry zest; and nice, rounded, balanced red fruit flavors throughout the midpalate. A lovely light but solid finish tricks you into thinking that this wine could be a barrel sample of one of the 10 Beaujolais Crus and not a "mere" nouveau.
- Gil Lempert-Schwarz

Personal Review:
This wine has a fruity and berry taste. It comes off very dry. I didn't think there was much of a finish. Overall this is an interesting wine that I wouldn't mind having again. Actually my roommate bought a bottle so the odd of me trying is again soon are very much in favor of it.

Tasting - "Mars and Venus Chardonnay"

Name:            Mars and Venus Chardonnay
Varietal:         Chardonnay
Region:          Central Valley
Country:        Chile
Year:             2011
Price:             $5.95

Online Review:
Toasty caramel pairs with citrus on the nose, while the brilliant straw color promises pear &
stone tastes.  Not oaky, this tasty Chilean white is fresh & a little racy!  Impressive wine
For the price!
- Wilkinson Wine Cellar

Personal Review:
In all honesty, this wine was so light and subtle, it taste a lot like water. There is a faint taste of fruit which came with the crispness. However there was not much a bite either. The wine wasn't very strong either so I doubt I would try this wine again.

Tasting - "La Cappuccina Soave"

Name:           La Cappuccina Soave
Varietal:        Garganega
Region:          Veneto
Country:        Italy
Year:             2011
Price:            $7.95

Online Review:
Bright straw yellow in color. Delicate on the nose, with notes of flowers and almonds. Dry, well-structured and delicately fruity, with hints of bitter almonds on the finish that is typical of Garganega-based wines.
- Winemaker

Personal Review:
This was a very light wine that is a bit dry and has a slight fruity taste. It had a flowery aroma. There was not much of a bite and it didn't have a strong taste of alcohol. I had never had a garganega based wine and I wasn't too thrilled with it.
